It explains what NAD+ is, where your cells make energy, what tends to change with age, and what each Lujevit ingredient is meant to do. Where the evidence is strong, we say so. Where the evidence is still early, we say that too. [What is NAD+?](https://www.lujevit.com/what-is-nad) [The full formula, dose by dose](https://www.lujevit.com/ingredients) [NAD+ for women over 40](https://www.lujevit.com/for-women) [Home](https://www.lujevit.com/) [Learn](https://www.lujevit.com/science) The Science ![Delicate molecular illustration of NAD+](https://www.lujevit.com/assets/generated/images/ecdc26e4caa80dd581420b43/1064.webp) #### Start here: the molecule every cell runs on NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) is a coenzyme, a helper molecule present in every living cell. It carries electrons in the process that converts food into ATP, the cell’s fuel. Enzymes involved in DNA maintenance (PARPs) consume it. Sirtuins, proteins involved in cellular signaling and stress responses, also require it.\[3\] Your body makes NAD+ from precursors, forms of vitamin B3 such as nicotinamide riboside (NR). Because NAD+ is constantly used up, supply depends partly on how much precursor is available. [Read the full explainer](https://www.lujevit.com/what-is-nad) #### Where energy is actually made: the mitochondria Mitochondria are small structures inside your cells (hundreds to thousands per cell in muscle, heart, and brain) that turn nutrients into ATP. NAD+ is essential to that process, and so is coenzyme Q10, which shuttles electrons along the electron transport chain that generates ATP.\[4\] This is the “cellular energy” Lujevit refers to. It’s not a stimulant effect. Caffeine changes how alert you feel. It doesn’t change how much ATP your cells produce. INPUT ##### Nutrients Carbohydrates, fats, and proteins from the food you eat. WHERE IT HAPPENS ##### Mitochondria Tiny structures inside your cells that turn those nutrients into usable energy. OUTPUT ##### ATP The fuel every cell runs on, powering everything from your heartbeat to your thoughts. Simplified view of how your cells turn food into energy.\[4\] #### Three things that tend to change in your cells after 40 ![Cell illustration: NAD+ availability](https://www.lujevit.com/assets/generated/images/77a10cf1246788aaae37b9e1/2048.webp) ##### NAD+ availability Studies report lower NAD+ levels with age in several human tissues, along with higher activity of the enzymes that consume it.\[5\] The exact extent of the decline varies by tissue and measurement method. That’s why we don’t quote a percentage. Related active: nicotinamide riboside ![Cell illustration: Oxidative stress](https://www.lujevit.com/assets/generated/images/80debee8587f694417c0f47d/2048.webp) ##### Oxidative stress Normal metabolism produces reactive molecules (free radicals). The body’s antioxidant defenses handle them, but the balance can shift with age.\[6\] Related actives: quercetin phytosome, trans-resveratrol, pterostilbene ![Cell illustration: Cellular cleanup (autophagy)](https://www.lujevit.com/assets/generated/images/56e7c4cfe57c53c3d6d7762f/2048.webp) ##### Cellular cleanup (autophagy) Autophagy is the process cells use to break down and recycle damaged components. It tends to become less efficient with age. Spermidine induces autophagy in cell and animal models.\[7\] Related active: spermidine #### Six actives and what they do | Active | What it does | Per serving | | --- | --- | --- | | Nicotinamide Riboside (as chloride) | NAD+ precursor, shown to raise NAD+ levels\[1\]\[2\] | 500 mg | | Quercetin Phytosome | Quercetin combined with sunflower phospholipids | 250 mg | | Trans-Resveratrol | Antioxidant support, the most-studied form of resveratrol | 150 mg | | Coenzyme Q10 | Supports mitochondrial energy production\*\[4\] | 100 mg | | Pterostilbene | A plant compound structurally related to resveratrol | 50 mg | | Spermidine (as HCl) | Studied for its role in autophagy, the cell’s recycling process\[7\] | 10 mg | [Every ingredient explained in depth](https://www.lujevit.com/ingredients) #### Do NAD+ supplements work? What the evidence says ##### Well established Randomized trials of oral NR have measured increases in blood NAD+ in adults.\[1\]\[2\] Research on other ingredients examines specific forms, doses and biological processes.\[7\]\[8\] These findings do not establish the effects of Lujevit’s finished formula. ##### Promising, not settled Trials have shown mixed results on whether raising NAD+ leads to measurable changes in energy, metabolism, or cardiovascular markers. Long-term studies with clinical outcomes are still missing.\[10\] ##### Not shown Lujevit has not been shown to reverse aging, treat disease, or improve memory or focus. We don’t make those claims. If you take medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a medical condition, discuss the ingredients with your clinician before use. [Evidence, safety & side effects](https://www.lujevit.com/science) Is NAD+ a vitamin? No. NAD+ is a coenzyme your body produces, mainly from forms of vitamin B3 such as niacin, nicotinamide, and nicotinamide riboside (NR). NMN is a closely related precursor. Can I get NAD+ from food? Not directly. NAD+ is poorly absorbed when swallowed, but food provides the building blocks your body uses to make it, such as vitamin B3 and tryptophan. NR occurs naturally in milk, but only in trace amounts. How long does it take for NR to raise NAD+ levels? In studies, blood NAD+ levels rose within one to two weeks of taking NR daily.\[1\] What you notice, and when, varies from person to person, so consistent daily use matters. Lujevit is formulated to support cellular energy production.\* It is not a stimulant, and it doesn’t replace sleep, food or movement. #### 3 cellular processes behind the formula. Your cells run them every day, at your desk as much as anywhere. They explain why each ingredient is in Lujevit. 1. Mitochondria • ATP ##### Energy production Your cells turn nutrients into usable energy. NAD+ and CoQ10 take part in that process. In Lujevit NR (an NAD+ precursor) · CoQ10 2. Free radicals • Balance ##### Antioxidant defenses Normal metabolism produces reactive molecules. Your body’s antioxidant systems help keep them in balance. In Lujevit Quercetin · Trans-resveratrol · Pterostilbene 3. Autophagy • Renewal ##### Cellular recycling Autophagy is how cells recycle worn components. Spermidine’s role is being studied in cell and animal models. In Lujevit Spermidine HCl [Explore the science](https://www.lujevit.com/science) ![Lujevit with coffee, toast and blueberries on a breakfast table](https://www.lujevit.com/assets/generated/images/aaa4654f8fe44cb570d51d94/2752.webp) ● THE LUJEVIT FORMULA #### How Lujevit supports those systems— technically Two capsules with breakfast. Human trials show NR raises blood NAD+; whether people notice a difference varies, and research on how energetic people feel is mixed. If it isn’t for you, the 30-day guarantee covers it. - Medication ##### Is it OK with my medication? Ask first. In a six-week human trial, 1,000 mg of NR a day was well tolerated. If you’re pregnant, nursing or take medication for blood pressure, blood sugar, thyroid or anything else, check with your doctor first. - Cost ##### What does it cost per day? $2.05/day $2.05 to $2.93 a serving, depending on the pack. One bottle lasts 30 days. - Routine ##### Another pill to remember? Once a day. Two capsules with breakfast. No cycling, no loading phase and no second dose. ##### More questions women ask Is there a best NAD+ supplement for women specifically? No evidence suggests that NR works differently by sex. What matters is the formula and whether it fits your routine. Use the six-point checklist above. Can I take it with coffee? We wanted the version for everyone else: a complete, well-dosed formula in one morning dose, at a price that makes sense for something you’d take every day. #### What we believe ##### Precision over excess Six actives that each earn their place, not thirty at token doses. ##### Say what the evidence says We cite the studies behind each ingredient, and we’re clear about what isn’t known yet. ##### Nothing hidden Every dose on the label, with the current lot’s Certificate of Analysis available to anyone. ![Supplement capsules on a manufacturing production line](https://www.lujevit.com/assets/generated/images/28a1b05c2da5cefabb2c34e2/3168.webp) #### How Lujevit is made Lujevit is produced in the United States, in a GMP-certified, FDA-registered facility in Florida. See the formula & packs](https://www.lujevit.com/product?pack=1) #### About NAD+ What is NAD+? A coenzyme found in every living cell that helps convert food into energy (ATP) and is used by enzymes involved in DNA maintenance and cell signaling. Levels tend to decline with age. [Full explainer](https://www.lujevit.com/what-is-nad) Was this helpful? Yes No Do NAD+ supplements work? For what they’re designed to do, yes: randomized trials show oral nicotinamide riboside reliably raises blood NAD+ levels. Whether that changes how you feel or function is still being studied, with mixed results so far. We don’t claim more than that. Was this helpful? Yes No What are the side effects of NAD+ supplements? In a six-week trial in healthy middle-aged and older adults, NR at 1,000 mg per day was well tolerated. That trial did not test Lujevit’s finished six-ingredient formula. Individual responses may vary. If symptoms persist, stop use and consult your healthcare professional. Was this helpful? Yes No Is NAD+ supplementation safe? NR has been studied in human trials, but these studies do not establish safety for everyone or evaluate Lujevit’s finished six-ingredient formula. Lujevit is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. If you take medication or have a medical condition, consult your healthcare professional before use. Was this helpful? Yes No NR vs. NMN: which is better? Both are NAD+ precursors related to vitamin B3. Current evidence does not establish that one is superior or that they are clinically equivalent. Lujevit uses nicotinamide riboside chloride. Was this helpful? Yes No What about liposomal NAD+ or IV NAD+? These are different ways of delivering NAD+ itself. Oral NAD+ is poorly absorbed intact, and IV requires a clinic and has limited evidence for healthy adults. Precursors like NR are the best-studied oral route. Was this helpful? Yes No How long does it take to raise NAD+ levels? In trials, blood NAD+ metabolites rose within one to two weeks and stayed elevated with daily use.\[1\] That's a lab measurement, not a feeling. Was this helpful? Yes No Is NAD+ a vitamin? No. NAD+ is a coenzyme your body produces, mainly from forms of vitamin B3 such as niacin, nicotinamide, and nicotinamide riboside (NR). NMN is a closely related precursor. Was this helpful? Yes No Can I get NAD+ from food? Not directly. NAD+ is poorly absorbed when swallowed, but food provides the building blocks your body uses to make it, such as vitamin B3 and tryptophan. NR occurs naturally in milk, but only in trace amounts. Was this helpful? Yes No Is there a best NAD+ supplement for women specifically? No evidence suggests NR works differently by sex. What matters is the formula and whether it fits your routine. Use the six-point checklist above. Was this helpful? Yes No #### About the ingredients Why 500 mg of nicotinamide riboside? Lujevit provides 500 mg of nicotinamide riboside chloride per serving. Human studies have evaluated a range of NR doses and measured changes in blood NAD+. These measurements do not establish how someone will feel or prove benefits from Lujevit’s finished formula. Was this helpful? Yes No What is quercetin phytosome? A formulation combining quercetin with sunflower phospholipids. Lujevit provides 250 mg of quercetin phytosome per serving. Was this helpful? Yes No What does spermidine do, and does it have side effects? Spermidine is involved in cellular processes including autophagy and has been studied in cell, animal and early human research. Evidence for the effects of Lujevit’s dose and formulation in humans remains limited. The label lists 10 mg of spermidine hydrochloride per serving. Was this helpful? Yes No Why both resveratrol and pterostilbene? Resveratrol and pterostilbene are related plant compounds. Lujevit includes 150 mg of trans-resveratrol and 50 mg of pterostilbene per daily serving of two capsules. Both ingredients and their amounts are disclosed on the label. Was this helpful? Yes No Is the CoQ10 ubiquinone or ubiquinol? Ubiquinone, 100 mg per serving, as listed on the Certificate of Analysis. Was this helpful? Yes No Is Lujevit vegan? Does it contain allergens? Yes, it’s vegan: hypromellose capsule, no animal ingredients, non-GMO. No allergens are declared on the label. Was this helpful? Yes No Does it contain caffeine? No. Lujevit contains no caffeine or stimulants. Was this helpful? Yes No #### Taking Lujevit What’s the best time to take an NAD+ supplement? Morning, with your first meal. There’s no strong evidence for a specific time, but taking it with food helps with the fat-soluble CoQ10, and mornings are easier to keep consistent. That’s the Lujevit protocol: 2 capsules with breakfast. Was this helpful? Yes No Can I take it on an empty stomach? You can, but we recommend taking it with food for better CoQ10 absorption and comfort. Was this helpful? Yes No Can I take it with coffee? Yes. No need to skip your morning coffee. Was this helpful? Yes No Can I take it with my other supplements? Check the labels for overlapping ingredients and doses before combining supplements. Ask your healthcare professional about combinations, especially if you take medication or have a medical condition. Lujevit does not replace your prescribed treatment. Was this helpful? Yes No Who should not take Lujevit? Pregnant or nursing women; anyone under 18; and, without a physician’s OK, anyone with a medical condition or on prescription medication. Was this helpful? Yes No What if I miss a day? Take it the next morning. Don’t double up. Was this helpful? Yes No When will I notice something? Studies show NAD+ levels rising within one to two weeks of taking NR daily.\[1\] What you notice, and when, varies from person to person. Give it the full 30 days. Was this helpful? Yes No I’m over 50. Is it different for me? No. The same guidance applies at any adult age. If you take any medication, talk to your physician first. Was this helpful? Yes No Two capsules. Once a day, with food. [View Lujevit packs](https://www.lujevit.com/product?pack=1) #### Quality Where is Lujevit made? In the USA, in a GMP-certified, FDA-registered facility in Florida. (Dietary supplements are not approved by the FDA; registration means the facility is subject to FDA inspection.) Was this helpful? Yes No Is it third-party tested? Yes. Independent labs test every batch for potency and heavy metals. [Download the Certificate of Analysis](https://www.lujevit.com/quality) Was this helpful? Yes No How should I store it? Store in a cool, dry place with the lid closed. Keep out of reach of children. Was this helpful? Yes No #### Orders, shipping and the guarantee Where do you ship? We ship to all 50 US states only. Category: About NAD+ Published contexts: faq A coenzyme found in every living cell that helps convert food into energy (ATP) and is used by enzymes involved in DNA maintenance and cell signaling. Levels tend to decline with age. [Full explainer](https://www.lujevit.com/what-is-nad) ### Do NAD+ supplements work? Category: About NAD+ Published contexts: faq For what they’re designed to do, yes: randomized trials show oral nicotinamide riboside reliably raises blood NAD+ levels. Whether that changes how you feel or function is still being studied, with mixed results so far. We don’t claim more than that. ### What are the side effects of NAD+ supplements? Category: About NAD+ Published contexts: faq In a six-week trial in healthy middle-aged and older adults, NR at 1,000 mg per day was well tolerated. That trial did not test Lujevit’s finished six-ingredient formula. Individual responses may vary. If symptoms persist, stop use and consult your healthcare professional. ### Is NAD+ supplementation safe? Category: About NAD+ Published contexts: faq NR has been studied in human trials, but these studies do not establish safety for everyone or evaluate Lujevit’s finished six-ingredient formula. Lujevit is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. If you take medication or have a medical condition, consult your healthcare professional before use. ### NR vs. NMN: which is better? Category: About NAD+ Published contexts: faq Both are NAD+ precursors related to vitamin B3. Current evidence does not establish that one is superior or that they are clinically equivalent. Lujevit uses nicotinamide riboside chloride. ### What about liposomal NAD+ or IV NAD+? Category: About NAD+ Published contexts: faq These are different ways of delivering NAD+ itself. Oral NAD+ is poorly absorbed intact, and IV requires a clinic and has limited evidence for healthy adults. Precursors like NR are the best-studied oral route. ### How long does it take to raise NAD+ levels? Category: About NAD+ Published contexts: faq In trials, blood NAD+ metabolites rose within one to two weeks and stayed elevated with daily use.[1] That's a lab measurement, not a feeling. ### Is NAD+ a vitamin? Category: About NAD+ Published contexts: faq, nad No. NAD+ is a coenzyme your body produces, mainly from forms of vitamin B3 such as niacin, nicotinamide, and nicotinamide riboside (NR). NMN is a closely related precursor. ### Can I get NAD+ from food? Category: About NAD+ Published contexts: faq, nad Not directly. NAD+ is poorly absorbed when swallowed, but food provides the building blocks your body uses to make it, such as vitamin B3 and tryptophan. NR occurs naturally in milk, but only in trace amounts. ### Is there a best NAD+ supplement for women specifically? Category: About NAD+ Published contexts: faq No evidence suggests NR works differently by sex. What matters is the formula and whether it fits your routine. Use the six-point checklist above. ### Why 500 mg of nicotinamide riboside? Category: About the ingredients Published contexts: faq Lujevit provides 500 mg of nicotinamide riboside chloride per serving. Human studies have evaluated a range of NR doses and measured changes in blood NAD+. These measurements do not establish how someone will feel or prove benefits from Lujevit’s finished formula. ### What is quercetin phytosome? Category: About the ingredients Published contexts: faq A formulation combining quercetin with sunflower phospholipids. Lujevit provides 250 mg of quercetin phytosome per serving. ### What does spermidine do, and does it have side effects? Category: About the ingredients Published contexts: faq Spermidine is involved in cellular processes including autophagy and has been studied in cell, animal and early human research. Evidence for the effects of Lujevit’s dose and formulation in humans remains limited. The label lists 10 mg of spermidine hydrochloride per serving. ### Why both resveratrol and pterostilbene? Category: About the ingredients Published contexts: faq Resveratrol and pterostilbene are related plant compounds. Lujevit includes 150 mg of trans-resveratrol and 50 mg of pterostilbene per daily serving of two capsules. Both ingredients and their amounts are disclosed on the label. ### Is the CoQ10 ubiquinone or ubiquinol? Category: About the ingredients Published contexts: faq Ubiquinone, 100 mg per serving, as listed on the Certificate of Analysis. ### Is Lujevit vegan? Does it contain allergens? Category: About the ingredients Published contexts: faq Yes, it’s vegan: hypromellose capsule, no animal ingredients, non-GMO. No allergens are declared on the label. ### Does it contain caffeine? Category: About the ingredients Published contexts: faq No. Lujevit contains no caffeine or stimulants. ### What’s the best time to take an NAD+ supplement? Category: Taking Lujevit Published contexts: faq Morning, with your first meal. There’s no strong evidence for a specific time, but taking it with food helps with the fat-soluble CoQ10, and mornings are easier to keep consistent. That’s the Lujevit protocol: 2 capsules with breakfast. ### Can I take it on an empty stomach? Category: Taking Lujevit Published contexts: faq You can, but we recommend taking it with food for better CoQ10 absorption and comfort. ### Can I take it with coffee? Category: Taking Lujevit Published contexts: faq Yes. No need to skip your morning coffee. ### Can I take it with my other supplements? Category: Taking Lujevit Published contexts: faq Check the labels for overlapping ingredients and doses before combining supplements. Ask your healthcare professional about combinations, especially if you take medication or have a medical condition. Lujevit does not replace your prescribed treatment. ### Who should not take Lujevit? Category: Taking Lujevit Published contexts: faq Pregnant or nursing women; anyone under 18; and, without a physician’s OK, anyone with a medical condition or on prescription medication. ### What if I miss a day? Category: Taking Lujevit Published contexts: faq Take it the next morning. Don’t double up. ### When will I notice something? Category: Taking Lujevit Published contexts: faq, product Studies show NAD+ levels rising within one to two weeks of taking NR daily.[1] What you notice, and when, varies from person to person. Give it the full 30 days. ### I’m over 50. Is it different for me? Category: Taking Lujevit Published contexts: faq No. The same guidance applies at any adult age. If you take any medication, talk to your physician first. ### Where is Lujevit made? Category: Quality Published contexts: faq In the USA, in a GMP-certified, FDA-registered facility in Florida. (Dietary supplements are not approved by the FDA; registration means the facility is subject to FDA inspection.) ### Is it third-party tested? Category: Quality Published contexts: faq Yes. What researchers actually found in human tissue and blood, what supplements can and can't do, and what it means for women 40+. If you've read anything about healthy aging lately, you've probably come across some version of the claim "your NAD+ levels drop as you age." Often it comes with a dramatic percentage and a product ready to fix it. The research is more interesting than that, and the honest version is more useful. Some of it is well established, some is still being worked out, and a few findings may surprise you. This guide covers what researchers mean by NAD+ decline, where it shows up, why blood tests may not tell you much, what supplements can and can't do, and a realistic way to think about aging well. The short answer: NAD+ is a coenzyme your cells use to make energy and maintain themselves. Research in animals and humans shows that NAD+ tends to decline with age in several tissues, but the decline isn't uniform. It varies by tissue, by how it's measured, and possibly by sex. Supplements with NAD+ precursors reliably raise NAD+ in the blood. Whether that changes how you age is still an open question. ### What researchers mean by "NAD+ decline" NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) is a helper molecule found in every cell. It plays a central role in energy metabolism and influences many other cellular functions, including DNA repair, immune cell function, and cellular senescence [\[1\]](https://www.lujevit.com/blog/nad-and-aging-what-the-science-actually-shows#cms-reference-1). When researchers talk about "NAD+ decline," they mean a gradual drop in NAD+ inside tissues and cells over time. This pattern has been seen in many species, including rodents, and in some human tissues. The main explanation is an imbalance: during aging, NAD+ breakdown can outpace the cell's ability to make new NAD+ or recycle the old [\[1\]](https://www.lujevit.com/blog/nad-and-aging-what-the-science-actually-shows#cms-reference-1). One of the clearest early human findings came from skin. A small study of skin samples from people of different ages found a strong negative correlation between NAD+ levels and age in both men and women. In other words, older skin tended to have less NAD+ [\[2\]](https://www.lujevit.com/blog/nad-and-aging-what-the-science-actually-shows#cms-reference-2). #### Why the decline shows up more in some tissues The human evidence is uneven. Different tissues tell different stories: - Skin: lower NAD+ with age in both men and women. - Muscle: mixed. One study found NAD+ was among the metabolites most clearly lower in older adults' muscle [\[3\]](https://www.lujevit.com/blog/nad-and-aging-what-the-science-actually-shows#cms-reference-3). Another study, using magnetic resonance spectroscopy, found no difference in muscle NAD+ between young and older adults [\[4\]](https://www.lujevit.com/blog/nad-and-aging-what-the-science-actually-shows#cms-reference-4). - Brain: most imaging studies have found lower NAD+ in older adults \[11, 12\]; one found no difference [\[4\]](https://www.lujevit.com/blog/nad-and-aging-what-the-science-actually-shows#cms-reference-4). Part of the explanation is that each tissue manages its NAD+ differently. The rates at which NAD+ is made and broken down vary widely by tissue. Tissues also don't all use the same raw materials. The liver and kidneys can build NAD+ from tryptophan and nicotinic acid, while muscle relies on other routes [\[1\]](https://www.lujevit.com/blog/nad-and-aging-what-the-science-actually-shows#cms-reference-1). What uses up NAD+ also changes with age. CD38, an enzyme that consumes NAD+, becomes more abundant in multiple tissues with age, and in mice it is considered a major driver of age-related NAD+ decline. In animal studies, this has been linked to low-grade inflammation that builds up in tissues such as fat and liver over time [\[1\]](https://www.lujevit.com/blog/nad-and-aging-what-the-science-actually-shows#cms-reference-1). #### The limits of measuring NAD+ in blood This is where the story gets genuinely surprising. Blood is the easiest place to measure NAD+, and that's why at-home NAD+ tests use it. But blood may be a poor window into what's happening in your tissues. - A large study in Frontiers in Endocrinology (2022) measured whole-blood NAD+ in 1,518 adults. In men, blood NAD+ trended lower with age. In women, it didn't differ significantly across age groups and showed no trend like the men's [\[6\]](https://www.lujevit.com/blog/nad-and-aging-what-the-science-actually-shows#cms-reference-6). - A study in Nature Metabolism (2026) measured whole-blood NAD+ across seven independent groups of people. Blood NAD+ stayed remarkably stable with age and didn't change with lifestyle interventions. It did rise with nicotinamide riboside supplementation, as expected. The authors questioned whether blood NAD+ is useful as a marker of aging at all [\[7\]](https://www.lujevit.com/blog/nad-and-aging-what-the-science-actually-shows#cms-reference-7). - Diet affects blood NAD+ too. Red blood cell NAD+ falls when niacin (vitamin B3) status drops, so a blood result partly reflects what you eat [\[8\]](https://www.lujevit.com/blog/nad-and-aging-what-the-science-actually-shows#cms-reference-8). Put together, a blood NAD+ number can't tell you how much NAD+ is in your muscles, brain, or skin. A stable blood result doesn't mean nothing is changing in your tissues, and a lower one doesn't tell you why. ### Why NAD+ matters for healthy aging Researchers pay attention to NAD+ because of the jobs it does. It's central to energy metabolism, and it's also used by enzymes involved in maintaining DNA and responding to stress. These processes are essential for keeping tissues working well and for healthy aging. In animal models, restoring NAD+ improved a range of age-related measures. That's why the field is so active. But the leading researchers are also clear about what's missing. Major reviews note that much remains to be learned, including how to restore NAD+ during aging, whether doing so is safe, and whether it will benefit aging humans [\[1\]](https://www.lujevit.com/blog/nad-and-aging-what-the-science-actually-shows#cms-reference-1). There's also a human finding that points to something you can influence directly. In a study of muscle biopsies, older adults who exercised regularly had muscle NAD+ levels closer to those of young adults. Physically impaired older adults had the lowest levels, and NAD+ correlated with average daily step count and with mitochondrial and muscle function. The study was cross-sectional, so it shows an association, not cause and effect [\[3\]](https://www.lujevit.com/blog/nad-and-aging-what-the-science-actually-shows#cms-reference-3). Still, it suggests that how you live is tied to the same biology supplements are trying to support. ### Can supplements raise NAD+ levels? Yes, in the blood. That part is well established. Most NAD+ supplements don't contain NAD+ itself. They contain a precursor, usually nicotinamide riboside (NR), that cells convert into NAD+. - In a randomized, placebo-controlled crossover trial in healthy middle-aged and older adults, six weeks of NR raised no safety concerns and increased NAD+ levels in blood cells [\[9\]](https://www.lujevit.com/blog/nad-and-aging-what-the-science-actually-shows#cms-reference-9). - In an eight-week trial, daily NR raised whole-blood NAD+ in a dose-dependent way within two weeks, and the increase held for the rest of the study [\[10\]](https://www.lujevit.com/blog/nad-and-aging-what-the-science-actually-shows#cms-reference-10). Two honest caveats: 1. Blood isn't tissue. A critical review of 25 human NR studies found NR reliably raises NAD+ and related metabolites in the blood, but there's no indication that oral NR increases NAD+ in muscle [\[5\]](https://www.lujevit.com/blog/nad-and-aging-what-the-science-actually-shows#cms-reference-5). 2. Raising NAD+ isn't the same as changing how you age. The same review concluded that oral NR has shown few clinically relevant effects so far [\[5\]](https://www.lujevit.com/blog/nad-and-aging-what-the-science-actually-shows#cms-reference-5). So, does an NAD supplement for aging make sense? It can be a reasonable way to help support healthy NAD+ levels\* as part of a broader routine. It's not a way to reverse aging, and anyone telling you it is has gotten ahead of the evidence. ### What we still don't know Here are the questions science hasn't answered yet: - What happens in your tissues. Measuring NAD+ in human muscle, brain, or other organs requires biopsies or specialized imaging, so human tissue data are limited and sometimes conflicting. - Whether raising NAD+ changes outcomes. Most supplement trials have been small and short, and focused on safety and blood levels. - What happens over years. No long-term trials have followed people taking NAD+ precursors for many years. - What's different for women. There's very little evidence on sex differences in human NAD+. One large study found blood NAD+ fell with age in men but not in women, and researchers have speculated that sex hormones may explain the gap. But the 2026 study found no age change in blood at all, so whether there is a real sex difference is still open. We don't yet know how menopause affects NAD+ in tissues. We think saying this openly matters more than pretending otherwise. If a brand can't tell you what isn't known, be cautious about what it says is known. ### A realistic way to think about aging well If the goal is to keep your energy, strength, and independence for decades, the biggest levers aren't in a bottle: - Move daily and on purpose. One finding you can act on directly ties physical activity to muscle NAD+, though it shows an association, not cause [\[3\]](https://www.lujevit.com/blog/nad-and-aging-what-the-science-actually-shows#cms-reference-3). Walking counts. Strength training counts. Consistency matters more than intensity. - Protect your sleep. It's when your body does much of its repair work, and it shapes how you feel every day. - Eat enough protein and B vitamins. Your body makes NAD+ from vitamin B3 and from tryptophan in protein. Most people in the US already get enough niacin from food [\[8\]](https://www.lujevit.com/blog/nad-and-aging-what-the-science-actually-shows#cms-reference-8). - Keep up with checkups. Thyroid, iron, B12, blood pressure, and bone health matter more to how you feel at 50 and beyond than any single molecule. A supplement can be one piece of that routine. It works best when it's simple enough to take every day and when your expectations match the evidence. Where Lujevit fits. Research shows NAD+ tends to decline with age in several tissues in both animals and humans. But the decline isn't uniform. It's clearer in some tissues, such as skin, than in others. In blood, studies disagree, and in one large study women's blood NAD+ didn't change significantly with age. That's why we describe the decline as a general tendency and don't quote a specific percentage. #### Should I test my NAD+ levels? For most people, it's not very useful right now. At-home NAD+ tests measure blood, and recent research found that whole-blood NAD+ stays stable with age and lifestyle, which limits its value as a marker of aging. A blood result also can't tell you what's happening in your tissues. A conversation with your doctor about basics such as iron, B12, and thyroid function is usually more informative. #### Does menopause affect NAD+? We don't know yet. One study found that women's blood NAD+ didn't change with age while men's did, but a 2026 study across seven groups found no age change in blood at all, so it's unclear whether there's a real difference. This hasn't been studied directly, and data on menopause and tissue NAD+ are lacking. If you're in perimenopause or menopause and your energy or sleep has changed, talk to your doctor. There are well-studied options for menopausal symptoms. #### Is an NAD supplement for aging worth it for women over 40? It can be a reasonable choice if your expectations match the evidence. A supplement with an NAD+ precursor such as NR can help support healthy NAD+ levels.\* It hasn't been shown to slow or reverse aging. Look for a published dose, independent lab testing, and a return policy, and check with your doctor first if you take medication or have a medical condition. NAD+ supplements aren't recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. ### References 1. Covarrubias AJ, Perrone R, Grozio A, Verdin E. A clear, science-based guide Source: https://www.lujevit.com/blog/what-is-an-nad-supplement-a-clear-science-based-guide Author: The Lujevit Team Category: Science Published: 2026-10-22T18:08:01.840Z Updated: 2026-10-27T13:12:43.991Z Description: What an NAD supplement is, what NAD stands for, how NR and NMN precursors work, what the research shows, and how to choose one. Clear, science-based. If you’ve been reading about energy and healthy aging, you’ve probably seen “NAD supplement” on labels, in podcasts, and on IV-clinic menus. The term is used loosely, and the claims attached to it range from well-supported to wildly overstated. This guide covers what an NAD supplement is, what NAD stands for, what it does in your cells, and what the research supports, including where the science isn’t settled yet. The short answer: An NAD supplement is a dietary supplement designed to support your body’s levels of NAD+, a coenzyme your cells use to turn food into energy. Most don’t contain NAD+ itself. Instead, they contain a precursor, usually nicotinamide riboside (NR), a form of vitamin B3, or nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN), a compound your body makes from the same vitamin. Your cells convert both into NAD+. ### What is NAD+? The helper molecule in every cell NAD+ is a coenzyme, a helper molecule enzymes need to work. Every living cell contains it. Beyond energy metabolism, NAD+ serves as a cofactor or substrate for hundreds of enzymes, and researchers are still studying many of these roles [\[1\]](https://www.lujevit.com/blog/what-is-an-nad-supplement-a-clear-science-based-guide#cms-reference-1). #### What NAD stands for The NAD in "NAD supplement" stands for nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide. Each part of the name means something: - Nicotinamide is a form of vitamin B3. - Adenine is one of the building blocks of DNA and of ATP, the molecule your cells use for energy. - Dinucleotide means two nucleotides joined together. The “+” refers to the positive charge of its oxidized form, the one that’s ready to accept electrons. When NAD+ picks up electrons, it becomes NADH. Because these supplements aim to raise NAD+ levels, “NAD supplement,” “NAD+ supplement,” and “NAD booster” all describe the same idea. #### NAD+ and cellular energy: the mitochondrial connection When you eat, your cells break food down step by step. Along the way, NAD+ acts as a shuttle: it picks up electrons released from nutrients, becoming NADH, and carries them to the electron transport chain inside your mitochondria, which drives the conversion of ADP into ATP. ATP fuels nearly everything your body does, from a heartbeat to a thought. This is what “cellular energy” means. It isn’t the same as the alertness caffeine gives you. Caffeine works mainly by blocking tiredness signals in your brain. It changes how awake you feel, not the way your cells make ATP. #### Other jobs of NAD+: DNA repair and cell communication NAD+ isn’t only an energy carrier. It also helps regulate how DNA is repaired and packaged, how cells respond as they age, and how immune cells work. Two of the best-studied enzyme families are: - PARPs help repair damaged DNA. They use up NAD+ as they work. - Sirtuins help cells respond to stress and regulate metabolism. They also consume NAD+ in the process. Unlike in energy production, where NAD+ is recycled, these enzymes break it down, so your cells have to keep making more [\[1\]](https://www.lujevit.com/blog/what-is-an-nad-supplement-a-clear-science-based-guide#cms-reference-1). ### Why NAD+ comes up in midlife Interest in NAD+ comes from a recurring finding in aging research. NAD+ levels in tissues and cells tend to fall gradually with age in many species, including rodents, and in some human tissues. One explanation is an imbalance: during aging, NAD+ breakdown can outpace the cell’s ability to make NAD+ or recycle it. One enzyme in particular, CD38, becomes more abundant in multiple tissues with age and is a major consumer of NAD+ [\[1\]](https://www.lujevit.com/blog/what-is-an-nad-supplement-a-clear-science-based-guide#cms-reference-1). The human picture is less tidy than marketing suggests. A study of human skin samples found a strong negative correlation between NAD+ levels and age in both men and women [\[2\]](https://www.lujevit.com/blog/what-is-an-nad-supplement-a-clear-science-based-guide#cms-reference-2). Two brain studies using magnetic resonance spectroscopy found lower NAD+ in older adults \[3, 4\], while a small study suggested that age alone may not be a major factor in muscle and brain NAD+ levels [\[5\]](https://www.lujevit.com/blog/what-is-an-nad-supplement-a-clear-science-based-guide#cms-reference-5). Whether NAD+ declines, and by how much, appears to vary by tissue and measurement method. That’s why you won’t see us quote a specific percentage. Why midlife? That’s often when people notice their energy doesn’t bounce back like it used to, and they start looking for answers. Tiredness can have many causes: poor sleep, stress, low iron, thyroid issues, hormonal changes, or medications. NAD+ is one piece of the puzzle, not the answer to every symptom. If your fatigue is new or persistent, talk to your doctor before starting a new supplement. ### How NAD supplements work: precursors vs. NAD+ itself Your body makes NAD+ from vitamin B3 and from tryptophan, an amino acid found in protein-rich foods. Because the body can convert tryptophan into NAD+, nutrition guidelines count it toward your daily vitamin B3 intake [\[6\]](https://www.lujevit.com/blog/what-is-an-nad-supplement-a-clear-science-based-guide#cms-reference-6). An NAD supplement gives your body more of these building blocks to work with. #### Nicotinamide riboside (NR) NR is a form of vitamin B3 and an NAD+ precursor. Of the two newer precursors sold as NAD+ supplements, NR and NMN, NR has the longer record in human trials. In the first human pharmacokinetic study of NR, single doses of 100, 300, and 1,000 mg produced dose-dependent increases in blood NAD+ metabolites [\[7\]](https://www.lujevit.com/blog/what-is-an-nad-supplement-a-clear-science-based-guide#cms-reference-7). Since then, human trials have tested daily doses ranging from about 100 mg to 2,000 mg, mostly over weeks to a few months. #### NMN Your cells convert NR into NMN, then NMN into NAD+. That puts NMN one step closer to NAD+ in the production pathway. A review of human studies found that researchers most often test three candidates for raising NAD+: NMN, NR, and NR combined with pterostilbene [\[8\]](https://www.lujevit.com/blog/what-is-an-nad-supplement-a-clear-science-based-guide#cms-reference-8). Both NR and NMN raise blood NAD+ levels in humans, but well-designed head-to-head comparisons of their health effects remain scarce. NMN has also had a complicated regulatory history in the US. In 2022, the FDA took the position that NMN could not be sold as a dietary supplement, then reversed course on September 29, 2025, confirming that NMN is lawful for use in dietary supplements [\[9\]](https://www.lujevit.com/blog/what-is-an-nad-supplement-a-clear-science-based-guide#cms-reference-9). #### Why most supplements use a precursor NAD+ is a large molecule, and the digestive tract mostly breaks it down before it can be absorbed intact. Precursors are smaller, and cells can take them up and assemble NAD+ themselves. Even with precursors, the route isn’t as direct as it’s often drawn. Research, mostly in mice, suggests that much of the NR you swallow is broken down, largely in the liver, into nicotinamide, another form of vitamin B3, before it reaches the rest of the body [\[10\]](https://www.lujevit.com/blog/what-is-an-nad-supplement-a-clear-science-based-guide#cms-reference-10). Blood NAD+ still rises reliably, as the research section below shows. It’s simply a more indirect path than “swallow it, it goes straight into your cells.” ### What an NAD supplement is used for (and what it isn't) People take NAD supplements as a daily habit to help support healthy NAD+ levels.\* Since NAD+ is central to how cells produce energy, the goal is to promote cellular energy production and mitochondrial function as part of a healthy-aging routine, alongside sleep, movement, and good nutrition.\* What an NAD supplement isn't: - Not a stimulant. It works at the cellular level and doesn't give you a jolt the way caffeine does. - Not a treatment for any disease, no matter what some clinics or ads imply. - Not a weight-loss product. - Not "anti-aging." Nothing in a bottle reverses aging. - Not a substitute for a medical evaluation of fatigue or any other symptom. - Not an overnight fix. Trials measure lab values over weeks, not how people feel the next morning. ### What the research shows so far #### Well established: raising NAD+ levels Oral NR reliably raises NAD+ in human blood. This is the best-supported finding in NAD supplement research: - Martens et al., 2018: In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial in healthy middle-aged and older adults, six weeks of NR was well tolerated and increased NAD+ levels in blood cells [\[11\]](https://www.lujevit.com/blog/what-is-an-nad-supplement-a-clear-science-based-guide#cms-reference-11). - Conze et al., 2019: In an eight-week placebo-controlled trial in healthy overweight adults, 100, 300, and 1,000 mg of NR per day raised whole-blood NAD+ in a dose-dependent way within two weeks, and the increases held for the rest of the study \[12\]. #### Still being studied: longer-term outcomes The open question is whether raising blood NAD+ levels changes how people function or feel. So far, the answer is unclear: - Damgaard & Treebak, 2023: A critical review of 25 published human NR studies concluded that oral NR has shown few clinically relevant effects so far. The most reproducible signal was lower blood inflammatory markers, and there was no indication that oral NR increases muscle NAD+ [\[13\]](https://www.lujevit.com/blog/what-is-an-nad-supplement-a-clear-science-based-guide#cms-reference-13). - Freeberg et al., 2023: A review of NAD+ precursor trials noted that dosing regimens and study durations vary widely, and small sample sizes make physiological results hard to interpret [\[8\]](https://www.lujevit.com/blog/what-is-an-nad-supplement-a-clear-science-based-guide#cms-reference-8). The honest summary: NAD+ precursors reliably achieve the first step, which is raising NAD+ levels in the blood. Whether that leads to changes you’d notice day to day is still being researched, and large, long-term outcome trials are still lacking. ### Formats: capsules, liposomal, injections, and IV Capsules and powders (oral precursors). This is the most-studied route. Nearly all human trials of NAD+ precursors have used oral NR or NMN. It’s also the most practical for a daily routine. Liposomal NAD+. This is NAD+ wrapped in lipid layers and marketed for better absorption. Published placebo-controlled human data are limited, so the absorption claims are hard to verify. Injections and IV. These deliver NAD+ directly. IV drips are given in a clinic and often take several hours, while injections are quicker and can be given in a clinic or, with a prescription, at home. The first study to track what happens to infused NAD+ in people, a small pilot in healthy men, found that NAD+ was cleared from the blood as fast as it was infused for at least the first two hours [\[14\]](https://www.lujevit.com/blog/what-is-an-nad-supplement-a-clear-science-based-guide#cms-reference-14). Controlled trials of IV NAD+ for general wellness in healthy adults are lacking. For an everyday routine, an oral precursor is the most practical and best-studied option. ### Safety and who should talk to a doctor first In placebo-controlled trials, NR has been well tolerated. In the eight-week Conze trial, no one reported flushing, and adverse events did not differ significantly between the NR and placebo groups \[12\]. That sets NR apart from nicotinic acid, another form of B3, which can cause flushing at doses of 30 to 50 mg a day or more [\[6\]](https://www.lujevit.com/blog/what-is-an-nad-supplement-a-clear-science-based-guide#cms-reference-6). Most trials have lasted weeks to months, so long-term safety isn’t established yet. If you notice any persistent side effects, such as digestive discomfort, stop taking it and check with your doctor. Talk to your doctor before starting if you: - have a medical condition or take prescription medication, since supplements can interact with medications or interfere with lab tests; - are considering IV or injected NAD+. NAD supplements haven’t been studied during pregnancy or breastfeeding, so they’re not recommended then, and most are labeled for adults 18 and over. If a product combines several ingredients, check each one, not just the NAD+ precursor. ### How to evaluate an NAD supplement Use this checklist before you buy: 1. Is the precursor named, with a dose? "NAD+ complex" or "proprietary blend" without milligrams doesn't tell you anything you can compare. 2. Is the dose in the range studied in humans? NR trials have most often used 250–1,000 mg per day. 3. Is it tested by an independent lab? Look for a Certificate of Analysis you can actually read. 4. Are the claims proportionate? Red flags include "FDA approved," "reverses aging," "clinically proven to boost energy," specific percentages of NAD+ decline with no source, and before-and-after photos. 5. How is it made? All US supplement makers must follow GMP manufacturing standards; a GMP-certified facility has also passed an outside audit. "FDA-registered facility" means the site is registered with the FDA and can be inspected. It does not mean the FDA has approved the product. 6. What else is in it? Does it duplicate something you already take, or replace several bottles? 7. Can you return it? A clear return policy shows the brand stands behind the product. Where Lujevit fits. Lujevit centers on 500 mg of nicotinamide riboside chloride per serving, one of the most studied NAD+ precursors in human trials. It adds five compounds chosen for the systems NAD+ works with: CoQ10 to support mitochondrial energy production, three plant antioxidants, and spermidine to support the cell’s natural renewal processes.\* It’s two capsules with breakfast. Lujevit is made in a GMP-certified, FDA-registered facility in the USA, tested by an independent lab ([see our Certificates of Analysis](https://www.lujevit.com/assets/pdf/Certificate.pdf)), and backed by a 30-day money-back guarantee. Mostly, yes. “NAD” is the general name for the coenzyme, which exists in two forms: NAD+, which accepts electrons, and NADH, which carries them. In everyday use, “NAD supplement” and “NAD+ supplement” mean the same thing: a product designed to help support NAD+ levels. #### Can you get NAD+ from food? Not in a form your cells can use directly. Animal foods such as poultry, beef, and fish supply much of their niacin as NAD and NADP, but digestion breaks these down into smaller B3 forms, so eating NAD doesn’t deliver NAD+ intact to your cells. Your body uses B3 from foods such as fish, poultry, whole grains, and mushrooms, along with tryptophan from protein, to make its own NAD+ [\[6\]](https://www.lujevit.com/blog/what-is-an-nad-supplement-a-clear-science-based-guide#cms-reference-6). NR levels in food are very small compared with the doses used in studies. #### Are NAD supplements FDA approved? No. No dietary supplement is FDA approved. The FDA does not approve dietary supplements for safety, effectiveness, or labeling before they’re sold, and it does not approve supplements to treat or prevent disease [\[15\]](https://www.lujevit.com/blog/what-is-an-nad-supplement-a-clear-science-based-guide#cms-reference-15). Some ingredients do have a regulatory record. For example, one crystalline form of NR chloride has GRAS status for use in foods, and its maker has filed two New Dietary Ingredient notifications with the FDA for use in supplements \[12\]. If a brand says “FDA approved,” treat that as a red flag. ### References 1. Covarrubias AJ, Perrone R, Grozio A, Verdin E. NAD+ metabolism and its roles in cellular processes during ageing. What Might Be Going On Source: https://www.lujevit.com/blog/nicotinamide-riboside-nr-what-it-is-and-how-your-body-uses-it Author: The Lujevit Team Category: Lifestyle Published: 2026-10-18T01:37:47.045Z Updated: 2026-10-26T23:17:48.800Z Description: Sleeping 8 hours and still waking up tired? Common reasons, from fragmented sleep and late caffeine to midlife hormones and iron, and when to see a doctor. You did everything right. Lights out at a reasonable hour, eight hours in bed, maybe a decent score on your tracker. Then the alarm goes off and you feel like you barely slept. By mid-afternoon you're reaching for a second coffee you know will cost you tonight. If you're still tired after 8 hours of sleep, you're not imagining it, and you're far from alone. Feeling tired is common and usually not caused by a serious illness. But when tiredness doesn't improve with enough sleep, good nutrition and lower stress, it's worth having it checked. This guide walks through the most common reasons people wake up tired after a full night, what you can try this week, and when it's time to talk to a doctor. The short answer: Eight hours in bed doesn't guarantee eight hours of good sleep. The most common reasons you wake up tired are sleep that's lighter or more broken than you realize (from alcohol, late caffeine, stress, hormonal changes or sleep apnea), a mismatch between your schedule and your body clock, and medical causes such as low iron, low B12 or an underactive thyroid. Most of these can be identified, and many can be fixed. ### Sleep Quantity vs. Sleep Quality Most adults need at least seven hours of sleep a night. But hours are only part of the story. How rested you feel also depends on: - Continuity. How often your sleep is interrupted, even by awakenings you don't remember. - Depth. How much time you spend in the deeper stages of sleep and in REM sleep. - Timing. Whether you're sleeping at the times your body clock expects. Eight hours in bed can easily mean seven hours of actual sleep, broken into pieces by brief awakenings. You can get the full quantity and still miss the quality. That's why "I slept eight hours" and "I slept well" aren't always the same thing. ### Common Reasons You Wake Up Tired #### Light or fragmented sleep Sleep that's frequently interrupted leaves you less rested, even if the total hours look fine. One cause worth knowing about is obstructive sleep apnea, in which breathing repeatedly pauses or becomes shallow during sleep. Sleep apnea isn't only a problem for men who snore loudly. Women's risk rises during and after menopause, partly because of hormonal changes. Women also tend to have different symptoms. They more often report daytime sleepiness and frequent awakenings than loud snoring, so they may not suspect the condition. Menopause itself can cause insomnia, headaches and fatigue, which makes sleep apnea harder to recognize. If a partner has noticed pauses in your breathing, gasping or snoring, or if you wake with headaches or a dry mouth, mention it to your doctor. A sleep study can answer the question. #### Alcohol and late caffeine Alcohol helps many people fall asleep faster, which is why it feels like a sleep aid. It isn't one. A review of laboratory studies in healthy people found that alcohol, at every dose tested, shortened the time it took to fall asleep but made sleep more disrupted in the second half of the night. At moderate and high doses, it also reduced overall REM sleep. Researchers concluded that alcohol doesn't improve a full night's sleep. A glass of wine at dinner may be part of why you wake up at 3 a.m. or feel flat in the morning. Caffeine works on a longer delay than most people think. In a small study published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine, 400 mg of caffeine (about four cups of brewed coffee) taken even six hours before bedtime cut objectively measured sleep by more than an hour. The participants didn't notice the disruption themselves. If your afternoon coffee is a large one, it may be shortening your night without you feeling it. #### Stress and a busy mind Stress keeps the body in a more alert state, and that alertness doesn't switch off just because you're in bed. A busy mind can mean taking longer to fall asleep, sleeping more lightly, or waking early and not getting back to sleep. Depression and anxiety are also common causes of fatigue. If low mood, worry or loss of interest have been building alongside the tiredness, that belongs in a conversation with your doctor, not just a change in bedtime. #### Hormonal shifts in midlife For many women, the years before and around menopause bring changes in sleep. Sleep problems are among the most common and bothersome symptoms of menopause, and changes in sleep can be one of the early signs of perimenopause, sometimes years before periods stop. Hot flashes and night sweats can wake you repeatedly, even if you don't remember it in the morning. But they don't explain everything. Research shows that both hot flashes and hormone changes predict sleep problems, yet neither accounts for all of them, which means other factors such as stress and mood also play a role. If your sleep changed around the same time your cycle did, tell your doctor. There are effective, evidence-based options for menopausal sleep problems. #### Nutrition gaps: iron, B12 and vitamin D Some nutrient shortfalls are common, easy to test for, and closely linked to tiredness: - Iron. You don't have to be anemic for low iron to matter. In a randomized trial of 198 menstruating women with unexplained fatigue, normal hemoglobin and low ferritin (below 50 µg/L), 12 weeks of iron reduced fatigue more than placebo. Women who still have periods, especially heavy ones, are more likely to have low iron stores. Ask for a ferritin test rather than guessing. Iron supplements aren't harmless if you don't need them. - Vitamin B12. B12 deficiency affects about 2% to 3% of US adults. Risk factors include older age, limited dietary intake, and certain medications such as metformin and proton pump inhibitors (acid reflux medicines). Symptoms can include fatigue. A simple blood test can check your level. - Vitamin D. Low vitamin D is common, and it's often included in fatigue workups. The evidence that vitamin D supplements reduce everyday tiredness in otherwise healthy adults is limited and mixed. It's worth checking, but it's rarely the whole answer. #### Too little movement, or too much Both ends of the activity scale can leave you tired. Mayo Clinic lists both too little and too much physical activity among the common causes of fatigue. On the "too little" side, the evidence that regular movement helps is solid: a meta-analysis of 66 studies found that regular exercise has a moderate beneficial effect on sleep quality, along with smaller improvements in how long people sleep and how quickly they fall asleep. On the "too much" side, hard training without enough recovery, especially combined with a demanding job and short nights, can leave you running on empty. If you've recently ramped up workouts and your energy dropped at the same time, that's a clue. ### The Cellular Side of Fatigue At the most basic level, energy is a cellular process. Your cells turn the food you eat into ATP, the fuel nearly every process in your body runs on. Most of that work happens inside the mitochondria, and it depends on helper molecules such as NAD+. Researchers have found that NAD+ levels tend to decline with age in several tissues, which is one reason cellular energy has become an active area of aging research. It's tempting to draw a straight line from "my cells make less energy" to "that's why I'm tired." The honest picture is more complicated. Tiredness has many causes, most of the common ones are covered above, and research hasn't shown that cellular energy explains the everyday tiredness most people feel. Sleep, stress, hormones, iron, thyroid and medications should come first. They're more likely culprits, and they're testable and treatable. If you're curious about the cellular side, our guide to [what an NAD supplement is](https://www.lujevit.com/science/what-is-nad-supplement) explains the science and what the research does and doesn't show. ### When Tiredness Is a Reason to See a Doctor If you've been tired for weeks and it isn't improving, call your doctor. That's especially important if the fatigue comes with any of the following: - snoring, gasping or pauses in breathing during sleep, or nodding off while driving; - unexplained weight change, feeling unusually cold, or dry skin; - very heavy periods or periods that have become irregular; - low mood, loss of interest, or anxiety that won't let up; - a new medication. Some allergy medicines and antidepressants can cause fatigue. Don't stop or change any medication without talking to your doctor first. Thyroid problems are worth ruling out. Tiredness is the most common symptom of an underactive thyroid, and it's a condition that affects more women than men. Seek care right away if tiredness comes with chest pain, shortness of breath, fainting, or sudden weakness. If low mood comes with thoughts of harming yourself, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) in the US. What to bring to the appointment: when the tiredness started, what time of day it's worst, how it affects your life, and your sleep, caffeine and alcohol habits. It's reasonable to ask whether a blood count, ferritin, B12, vitamin D and thyroid tests make sense for you. ### What to Try This Week Treat the next seven days as an experiment. Change one or two things, not everything at once, and notice what shifts. 1. Keep one wake-up time, all seven days. Aim to stay within about an hour on weekends. A steady wake time anchors your body clock better than any bedtime rule. 2. Move your caffeine cutoff earlier. Since a large dose of caffeine six hours before bed still shortened sleep in the study above, try your last coffee before noon or early afternoon for a week. 3. Skip alcohol on weeknights. Or at least have it earlier and smaller. Notice whether the 3 a.m. wake-ups change. 4. Get daylight in the morning. Time outside in the morning, even on a cloudy day, helps set your internal clock. 5. Move every day. A brisk walk counts. Save very intense workouts for earlier in the day if late sessions leave you wired. 6. Make the bedroom cool and dark. This helps especially if night sweats are part of the picture. 7. Keep a simple log. Bedtime, wake time, caffeine, alcohol, and your energy at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Seven days of notes are more useful to you, and to your doctor, than a vague sense of being tired. If a week of better habits barely moves the needle, that's useful information too. It points toward a cause worth testing for rather than a habit to fix. ### Frequently Asked Questions #### Why am I always tired, even on weekends? If you're tired even after relaxed, well-rested weekends, sleep debt alone probably isn't the cause, and that's a good reason to see your doctor. If the tiredness is worst early in the week, one common reason is social jetlag: a gap between the schedule your body clock prefers and the one your work week demands. People whose natural rhythm runs late build up a sleep debt during the week and try to repay it on days off. Sleeping in on Saturday then shifts your clock later, which makes Monday harder. Keeping your wake time within about an hour on weekends usually helps. #### Can a sleep tracker tell me why I wake up tired? It can show patterns, but it can't give you a diagnosis. In a lab comparison of seven consumer devices against overnight polysomnography, every device correctly identified sleep at least 93% of the time, but their accuracy at detecting time awake ranged from only 18% to 54%. Sleep-stage breakdowns are the least reliable part. Trackers mostly infer sleep from movement and heart rate, not brain activity. There's also a downside to watching the numbers too closely. Sleep researchers coined the term orthosomnia after seeing patients who became anxious about their tracker data, in some cases trusting the device more than their own sleep study. Use your tracker for trends, such as your usual bedtime and how consistent your schedule is. Don't treat it as a diagnosis, and if your score worries you, bring the trend to your doctor rather than chasing a number. ### References 1. Watson NF, et al. Plus missed doses, coffee and other supplements. You've got your first bottle. Now the practical questions: when should you take it, with or without food, and what happens if you forget a day? This guide answers all of that, including the general question of the best time to take an NAD supplement, so the routine is simple from day one. The short version: Take two capsules of Lujevit once a day with your first meal. Morning works best for most people, because it's easy to remember and pairs Lujevit with breakfast. What matters most isn't the exact hour. It's taking it with food, every day. ### The Best Time to Take an NAD Supplement #### Why we recommend mornings There's no strong scientific evidence that one time of day makes an NAD+ precursor work better than another. We still recommend mornings, with your first meal, for two practical reasons: 1. It's easier to remember. Breakfast is the most consistent meal for most people, and anchoring a supplement to something you already do daily is one of the simplest ways to make it stick. 2. It pairs Lujevit with food. One of its ingredients, CoQ10, is fat-soluble and is absorbed better with a meal. More on that below. #### Morning or night: does it matter? Not much, as long as you're consistent. Lujevit contains no caffeine or stimulants, so it isn't expected to keep you up the way an afternoon coffee might. If your mornings are chaotic and your evening meal is your most reliable one, taking Lujevit with dinner every day is better than taking it with breakfast only some days. The one thing we'd avoid is switching meals from day to day. That's how doses get forgotten. Pick the meal you're most likely to remember and stick with it. ### Why Lujevit Is Taken With Food The label says to take Lujevit with your first meal. Here's why: - Absorption. Coenzyme Q10 is a fat-soluble compound, and taking it with a meal that contains some fat helps your body absorb it. It doesn't need to be a heavy meal. Eggs, yogurt, nut butter on toast or avocado all count. - Comfort. Most supplements sit better on a full stomach than on an empty one. If you only have black coffee in the morning, take Lujevit with your first real meal of the day instead, whenever that is. ### Why Consistency Matters More Than Timing NAD+ precursors work through daily intake, not a single dose. In a placebo-controlled trial, daily nicotinamide riboside raised NAD+ in the blood within two weeks, and those higher levels lasted for the rest of the eight-week study as people kept taking it. Another trial in healthy middle-aged and older adults ran for six weeks, with the daily amount split into two doses. That's what studies measure: steady, everyday use over weeks. Taking Lujevit at 7 a.m. one day and 9 a.m. the next is fine. Skipping several days a week isn't, because that's not the pattern the research reflects. ### Building the Habit The easiest habits are attached to ones you already have. A few things that help: - Keep the bottle where breakfast happens. Next to the coffee maker or your mug works better than a bathroom cabinet. - Pair it with one specific action. For example: "After I pour my coffee, I take Lujevit." - Use a weekly pill organizer if you take several supplements. It also shows you at a glance whether you've taken today's dose. - Set a phone reminder for the first two weeks. After that, most people don't need it. - Pack it when you travel. A small container with a few days' doses keeps your routine intact on trips. ### Taking Lujevit With Coffee, Other Supplements and Medications Coffee: Yes, you can take Lujevit with coffee, as long as you also have some food. Other supplements: Lujevit replaces products containing NR, CoQ10, resveratrol, quercetin, pterostilbene or spermidine. If you take any of these separately, compare the doses. If a doctor recommended one of them, ask before stopping it. Lujevit doesn't replace a multivitamin, vitamin D, magnesium or omega-3. If you take those, keep taking them as usual. Medications: Dietary supplements can interact with medications or interfere with lab tests. If you take prescription medication, including blood thinners such as warfarin, or medicines for blood pressure, blood sugar or thyroid, check with your doctor before starting Lujevit. It's a short conversation and worth having with any supplement. ### If You Miss a Dose Just take your next dose at your usual time the next day. Don't double up to make up for it. One missed day won't undo your routine. What matters is the pattern over weeks, not any single day. If you're missing doses often, that's a sign to move Lujevit to a different meal or a more visible spot. ### Storage and Practical Tips - Store in a cool, dry place with the lid closed. Avoid the bathroom, where humidity from showers builds up. - Keep out of reach of children. - Don't take more than the recommended serving of two capsules a day unless your healthcare professional advises it. - One bottle lasts 30 days (60 capsules, two per day). If you'd rather not run out, reorder about a week before you finish. ### Frequently Asked Questions #### Can I take Lujevit on an empty stomach? You can, but we don't recommend it. Taking it with food helps your body absorb the CoQ10 in the formula, and most people find supplements easier on the stomach with a meal. #### Can I split the two capsules between two meals? Lujevit's directions are two capsules together, once a day, with your first meal. Studies have used both approaches; once a day is simply easier to keep up. If you have a specific reason to split the dose, ask your healthcare professional. #### Do I need to "load" or cycle off Lujevit? No. Lujevit's directions don't include a loading phase or breaks. You take the same two capsules every day. #### What's the best time to take an NAD supplement in general? For most NAD+ supplements, the best time is the one you'll stick to, with food. Research hasn't shown a meaningful advantage for a specific hour. Studies focus on daily use over weeks. For Lujevit specifically, that means two capsules with your first meal. Important: Not recommended for pregnant or nursing women. If you have a medical condition or take medication, consult your physician before use. Keep out of reach of children. For adults 18+ only. ### References 1. Conze D, Brenner C, Kruger CL. What NR chloride is, how it compares with niacin, and what studies show. Nicotinamide riboside shows up on more and more supplement labels, usually as "NR" or "nicotinamide riboside chloride." It's the main ingredient in many NAD+ supplements, but the name explains very little on its own. This guide covers what nicotinamide riboside is, how your body turns it into NAD+, what studies have measured so far, and how it compares with the B3 forms you may already take. The short answer: Nicotinamide riboside (NR) is a form of vitamin B3. Your cells use it as raw material to make NAD+, a coenzyme involved in turning food into energy. In human trials, taking NR by mouth has reliably raised NAD+ levels in the blood. Whether that leads to effects people notice or can measure in daily life is still being studied. ### What Is Nicotinamide Riboside? #### A form of vitamin B3 "Niacin" is the umbrella name for vitamin B3. It covers nicotinic acid, nicotinamide and related compounds, including nicotinamide riboside. Every form of B3 can feed your body's production of NAD+, but each one gets there by a different route. NR is a relatively recent addition to that family. Nicotinic acid and nicotinamide were identified as vitamin B3 in the 1930s. In 2004, researchers showed that yeast and human cells can use nicotinamide riboside to make NAD+ through their own enzymes, and found NR as a nutrient in milk [\[1\]](https://www.lujevit.com/blog/nicotinamide-riboside-nr-what-it-is-and-how-your-body-uses-it-2#cms-reference-1). #### What "chloride" means on the label (NRCl) On a supplement label, you'll usually see nicotinamide riboside chloride, sometimes shortened to NRCl. NR on its own isn't stable enough to manufacture reliably. Pairing it with chloride creates a stable salt that can be manufactured, measured and put into a capsule. This is the form used in most clinical research. One crystalline form of NR chloride has GRAS status for use in foods, and its maker has filed two New Dietary Ingredient notifications with the FDA for use in supplements [\[4\]](https://www.lujevit.com/blog/nicotinamide-riboside-nr-what-it-is-and-how-your-body-uses-it-2#cms-reference-4). Two practical points when you read a label: - The dose usually refers to the whole salt. When a label lists "500 mg nicotinamide riboside chloride," about 88% of that weight is NR itself and the rest is chloride. Many studies, including those using the NIAGEN ingredient, report their doses the same way, so you can compare labels with research directly. - It's made, not extracted. The NR chloride in supplements is obtained through chemical synthesis, with a purity of 90% or higher in the form the European Food Safety Authority evaluated [\[8\]](https://www.lujevit.com/blog/nicotinamide-riboside-nr-what-it-is-and-how-your-body-uses-it-2#cms-reference-8). That's normal for vitamins in supplements, and it's what makes precise dosing possible. ### How NR Becomes NAD+ in Your Cells Once NR reaches a cell, the path to NAD+ is short: 1. Uptake. NR enters cells through transporters in the cell membrane. 2. First conversion. Inside the cell, enzymes called nicotinamide riboside kinases (NRK1 and NRK2) add a phosphate group, turning NR into NMN. 3. Second conversion. Another enzyme turns NMN into NAD+. This route matters because it's different from the one nicotinamide takes. Nicotinamide has to pass through an enzyme called NAMPT to become NMN, and the supply of NMN is a rate-limiting factor in NAD+ production. NR reaches NMN through its own enzymes instead. In lab studies of muscle cells, blocking NAMPT drained NAD+, and NR and NMN were able to restore it through the NRK pathway [\[6\]](https://www.lujevit.com/blog/nicotinamide-riboside-nr-what-it-is-and-how-your-body-uses-it-2#cms-reference-6). The real-world nuance: the route isn't always this clean in the body. Research, mostly in mice, suggests that much of the NR taken by mouth is converted in the small intestine into other forms of B3, with help from gut bacteria, before it reaches the rest of the body [\[10\]](https://www.lujevit.com/blog/nicotinamide-riboside-nr-what-it-is-and-how-your-body-uses-it-2#cms-reference-10). Blood NAD+ still rises reliably, as the next section shows. The route is just less direct than diagrams usually suggest. ### Nicotinamide Riboside Benefits: What Studies Measured When we talk about nicotinamide riboside benefits, we mean what researchers actually measured in people, not what marketing promises. Here's where the evidence stands. #### Raising NAD+ levels This is the best-established finding: - Trammell et al., 2016: In the first human pharmacokinetic study of NR, single doses of 100, 300 and 1,000 mg produced dose-dependent increases in blood NAD+ metabolites [\[2\]](https://www.lujevit.com/blog/nicotinamide-riboside-nr-what-it-is-and-how-your-body-uses-it-2#cms-reference-2). - Martens et al., 2018: In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial in healthy middle-aged and older adults, six weeks of NR raised no safety concerns and increased NAD+ levels in blood cells [\[3\]](https://www.lujevit.com/blog/nicotinamide-riboside-nr-what-it-is-and-how-your-body-uses-it-2#cms-reference-3). - Conze et al., 2019: In an eight-week placebo-controlled trial, 100, 300 and 1,000 mg of NR per day raised whole-blood NAD+ in a dose-dependent way within two weeks, and the increases lasted for the rest of the study [\[4\]](https://www.lujevit.com/blog/nicotinamide-riboside-nr-what-it-is-and-how-your-body-uses-it-2#cms-reference-4). In short, NR supports healthy NAD+ levels\* when taken daily. Blood NAD+ metabolites rise within hours of a single dose [\[2\]](https://www.lujevit.com/blog/nicotinamide-riboside-nr-what-it-is-and-how-your-body-uses-it-2#cms-reference-2), and daily use keeps levels raised, as the eight-week trial showed [\[4\]](https://www.lujevit.com/blog/nicotinamide-riboside-nr-what-it-is-and-how-your-body-uses-it-2#cms-reference-4). #### Tolerability in adults NR has a solid tolerability record in studies so far: - In the eight-week Conze trial, there were no reports of flushing and no significant differences in adverse events between the NR and placebo groups [\[4\]](https://www.lujevit.com/blog/nicotinamide-riboside-nr-what-it-is-and-how-your-body-uses-it-2#cms-reference-4). - Studies in healthy adults have tested doses from a single 100 mg dose up to 2,000 mg a day for 12 weeks, without safety concerns in vital signs or routine blood tests [\[8\]](https://www.lujevit.com/blog/nicotinamide-riboside-nr-what-it-is-and-how-your-body-uses-it-2#cms-reference-8). - In the EU, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) assessed NR chloride as a novel food and found it safe for healthy adults at up to 300 mg a day, the amount the manufacturer applied for [\[8\]](https://www.lujevit.com/blog/nicotinamide-riboside-nr-what-it-is-and-how-your-body-uses-it-2#cms-reference-8). The 500 mg of NR chloride in Lujevit falls within the range tested in clinical trials, which have used up to 2,000 mg a day for 12 weeks [\[8\]](https://www.lujevit.com/blog/nicotinamide-riboside-nr-what-it-is-and-how-your-body-uses-it-2#cms-reference-8). Most trials have lasted weeks to a few months, so safety over many years isn't established yet. Because human data in pregnancy are limited, Lujevit is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. If you have a medical condition or take prescription medication, talk to your doctor before starting. #### Outcomes still under study The open question is what raising NAD+ does for how people feel and function. The honest answer is that it isn't clear yet: - Damgaard & Treebak, 2023: A critical review of 25 published human NR studies concluded that oral NR has shown few clinically relevant effects so far [\[5\]](https://www.lujevit.com/blog/nicotinamide-riboside-nr-what-it-is-and-how-your-body-uses-it-2#cms-reference-5). - The most consistent signal across several trials has been lower inflammatory markers in blood. - Muscle: results are mixed. Most human trials found no rise in muscle NAD+ itself, and one five-month study reported more mitochondria in muscle without better metabolic health. Animal studies were more positive \[5, 7\]. - Who's been studied: most trials have been small, focused on safety, and run in mostly healthy people. Longer studies in larger groups are still needed. NR reliably does the first step, which is raising NAD+ in the blood. What follows from that is an active area of research, and we'd rather tell you that than promise more. ### Nicotinamide Riboside vs. Nicotinamide and Niacin All three are forms of vitamin B3, and all three can become NAD+. They differ in how they get there and in how they're tolerated. | | Nicotinamide riboside (NR) | Nicotinamide (NAM, niacinamide) | Nicotinic acid ("niacin") | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Route to NAD+ | Converted to NMN by its own enzymes (NRK1/2), without passing through NAMPT | Converted to NMN by NAMPT, the rate-limiting step | A separate pathway through other intermediates | | Flushing | None reported in an 8-week placebo-controlled trial | Doesn't cause flushing | Typically causes flushing at 30–50 mg or more | | At high doses | Trials up to 2,000 mg/day for 12 weeks raised no safety concerns; no toxicity threshold has been established for NR | Nausea, vomiting and signs of liver toxicity can occur at about 3,000 mg/day | Pharmacologic doses can cause more serious side effects and are used only under medical supervision | | | Trials up to 2,000 mg/day for 12 weeks raised no safety concerns; no toxicity threshold has been established for NR | Nausea, vomiting and signs of liver toxicity can occur at about 3,000 mg/day | Pharmacologic doses can cause more serious side effects and are used only under medical supervision | | Common use | NAD+ support supplements | Multivitamins and B-complex; skincare | Prescription use for blood lipids | Nicotinamide riboside vs. nicotinamide: These two are closely related. As noted above, much oral NR becomes nicotinamide in the gut. The difference is mainly the route into the cell (NR doesn't need NAMPT) and the research focus: NR has been studied specifically as a way to raise NAD+, while nicotinamide is mostly studied as a vitamin. Nicotinamide riboside vs. niacin: The practical difference most people notice is flushing. Nicotinic acid causes a warm, red, tingling flush. NR doesn't. ### Food Sources vs. Supplements You already get vitamin B3 from food. Poultry, beef and fish provide roughly 5–10 mg of niacin per serving, mostly as NAD and NADP, while nuts, legumes and grains provide about 2–5 mg per serving, mostly as nicotinic acid [\[9\]](https://www.lujevit.com/blog/nicotinamide-riboside-nr-what-it-is-and-how-your-body-uses-it-2#cms-reference-9). Your body also makes some NAD+ from tryptophan, an amino acid in protein. NR itself is present in food, but only in small amounts. It was first identified as a nutrient in milk, specifically in the whey [\[1\]](https://www.lujevit.com/blog/nicotinamide-riboside-nr-what-it-is-and-how-your-body-uses-it-2#cms-reference-1). The amounts in a normal diet are tiny compared with the 100 to 2,000 mg a day tested in studies. That points to the real difference between food and supplements. Food covers your basic B3 needs and prevents deficiency, and most people in the US already get enough. NR supplements serve a different purpose: they provide a specific NAD+ precursor in the amounts researchers have studied for raising NAD+ levels. One doesn't replace the other. ### Frequently Asked Questions #### Is nicotinamide riboside the same as niacin? Not exactly. NR is one form of vitamin B3, and "niacin" is the umbrella term for the B3 family. In everyday use, though, "niacin" usually means nicotinic acid, the form that causes flushing. NR doesn't cause flushing. NR and NMN supplements also aren't marketed or labeled as sources of niacin. #### Is nicotinamide riboside safe to take every day? In clinical trials, daily NR has been well tolerated in healthy adults at doses up to 2,000 mg a day for as long as 12 weeks, with side effects similar to placebo. Long-term studies over many years haven't been done. Because human data in pregnancy are limited, Lujevit is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and if you have a medical condition or take medication, check with your doctor first. #### When is the best time to take nicotinamide riboside? There's no strong evidence that one time of day works better than another. What matters in studies is daily, consistent use, because the studies that showed lasting increases used daily doses. Taking it at the same time each day, such as with breakfast, makes that easier to keep up. #### How much nicotinamide riboside is in Lujevit? Each serving of Lujevit (two capsules) contains 500 mg of nicotinamide riboside chloride, within the range used in human trials. It's paired with five compounds chosen for the systems NAD+ works with: CoQ10 to support mitochondrial energy production, quercetin phytosome, trans-resveratrol and pterostilbene for antioxidant support, and spermidine to support the cell's natural renewal processes.\* Take two capsules with your first meal. Plus red flags and how to read reviews. Search for "best NAD supplement" and you'll find dozens of ranked lists, many published by sites earning a commission on every click. The rankings rarely agree, and they almost never show their work. This guide takes a different approach. Instead of telling you which product is "the best," it gives you seven objective criteria you can check on any label, so you can decide for yourself. You'll also learn what "FDA approved" really means for supplements, how to read reviews, and which red flags to watch for. The short answer: The best NAD supplement for you uses a well-studied precursor in a form and dose that match human research, lists every dose clearly, explains why any extra ingredients are there, is tested by an independent lab, is made under GMP standards, fits easily into your day, and comes with a fair guarantee. No NAD supplement is "FDA approved," and any brand that says so is a red flag. ### Why "Best" Depends on What You Need There's no single best NAD supplement for everyone, because people want different things: - One focused ingredient. Some people want a single NAD+ precursor and nothing else, at the lowest cost per dose. - Fewer bottles. Others want one product that replaces several on their counter. - Specific forms. Some care most about absorption, or about a particular precursor such as NR or NMN. - Specific seals. Some want a certification from a particular testing program. What should be the same for everyone is the standard of quality and honesty. That's what the checklist below measures. Use it to compare any products you're considering, including ours. ### The 7-Point Checklist #### 1. Precursor type and form Most NAD supplements don't contain NAD+ itself. They contain a precursor, a smaller molecule your cells turn into NAD+. The main options: - Nicotinamide riboside (NR). Of the newer precursors, the one with the most published human trials. Studies have tested daily doses from about 100 mg to 2,000 mg, mostly over weeks to a few months, and NR has reliably raised NAD+ in the blood. Look for nicotinamide riboside chloride, the stable form used in most clinical research. - Nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN). One step closer to NAD+ in the body's production pathway. Its human research record is shorter but growing. After a period of regulatory uncertainty, the FDA confirmed in September 2025 that NMN is lawful for use in dietary supplements. - NAD+ itself (oral, liposomal, IV). Directly delivered NAD+ has much thinner human evidence. When swallowed, NAD+ is largely broken down in the gut before it can be absorbed intact. What to check: the label names the precursor and its form, not just "NAD+ complex" or "NAD+ booster blend." #### 2. Doses clearly listed on the label This is the single fastest test of a brand's transparency. US rules allow companies to group ingredients into a "proprietary blend" and list only the blend's total weight, not the amount of each ingredient. That means you can't tell whether a product contains a studied dose or just a trace. What to check: - Every active ingredient is listed with its own amount in milligrams per serving. - The precursor dose falls within the range used in published human trials. For NR, most trials have used 250–1,000 mg per day. - How many capsules make one serving, since amounts are listed per serving. - How many servings are in the container. That's how you calculate the real cost per day. #### 3. Complementary ingredients with a clear rationale Many NAD supplements add other compounds, such as CoQ10, resveratrol, pterostilbene, quercetin or spermidine. That can be useful, as long as each ingredient has a clear reason to be there and a meaningful dose. Keep two things in mind: - More isn't automatically better. A label with 15 ingredients at token doses is less useful than one with a few ingredients at studied amounts. - "Synergy" is usually a theory, not a finding. Even well-designed combinations are rarely tested as finished products. When two ingredients are tested together, as NR and pterostilbene have been, the trials can't tell which compound produced which effect. Each ingredient brings its own evidence, and its own considerations. What to check: the brand explains what each ingredient is there to do, in plain language, and doesn't claim "proven synergy" without a trial of the actual product. #### 4. Third-party testing and a Certificate of Analysis A label tells you what the brand says is in the bottle. Independent testing tells you whether that's true. Look for one or both of these: - A Certificate of Analysis (COA) from an independent laboratory, ideally for the batch you're buying. A useful COA shows the lab's name, the batch number, the date, the measured amount of each active ingredient, and results for contaminants such as heavy metals and microbes. - A verification program seal. For example, the USP Verified Mark indicates that a supplement contains the listed ingredients in the declared amounts, doesn't contain harmful levels of specified contaminants such as heavy metals and pesticides, and breaks down properly so it can be absorbed. What to check: "3rd party tested" is backed by a document you can actually open and read. A badge without a COA, or a COA you can't read, doesn't count. #### 5. Manufacturing standards (GMP) In the US, dietary supplement makers must follow the FDA's Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulations, known as GMP. These rules require specifications for each product's identity, purity, strength and composition, along with limits on contaminants. Two terms are easy to confuse: - "Made in a GMP-certified facility." The manufacturer has been audited against these manufacturing standards. This is a standard for how the product is made, not proof that it works. - "FDA-registered facility." The facility is registered with the FDA and can be inspected. This does not mean the FDA has approved the product. What to check: the brand says where and how the product is made, and explains what its seals mean without inflating them. #### 6. A simple daily protocol Clinical trials measure daily use over weeks. In one trial, daily NR raised blood NAD+ by the first check at two weeks, and levels stayed raised through the end of the eight-week study. The best supplement is the one you'll actually take every day. What to check: - How many capsules per day. - Whether you take it once or several times a day. - Whether it should be taken with food. - Whether it replaces bottles you already take, or adds to the pile. #### 7. A fair satisfaction guarantee A guarantee lowers your risk when trying something new, but only if it's real. Under FTC guidance, a seller should use the term "money-back guarantee" only if it refunds the full purchase price at the buyer's request, and any conditions, such as a return deadline, should be disclosed clearly and prominently. What to check: the guarantee terms are easy to find before you buy. Look for how many days you have, whether you need to return the bottle, and whether shipping is refunded. If you have to dig for the details, assume they're restrictive. ### Is Any NAD Supplement "FDA Approved"? No. If you've searched for "best NAD supplement FDA approved," the honest answer is that none exist. The FDA does not approve dietary supplements for safety, effectiveness or labeling before they're sold, and it doesn't approve supplements for any purpose. What the FDA does is regulate supplements once they're on the market, set manufacturing rules (GMP), and act against unsafe products or false claims. Here's what the quality terms you'll see actually mean: | Term on the label | What it means | What it doesn't mean | | --- | --- | --- | | FDA-registered facility | The facility is registered and can be inspected | The FDA approved the product | | | The facility is registered and can be inspected | product | | GMP-certified | Made under manufacturing quality standards | The product works | | Third-party tested | An outside lab checked contents and contaminants | The product is effective | | GRAS / NDI notification | A company documented the ingredient's safety, in some cases with FDA review | The FDA approved the ingredient or the product | Any brand that says "FDA approved" about a supplement is either mistaken or misleading you. Either way, move on. ### How to Read NAD Supplement Reviews Reviews can be useful, as long as you know what you're reading. Ranked "best of" lists. Many are affiliate content: the site earns a commission when you buy. That doesn't make the list worthless, but it should be disclosed. Check whether the list explains its criteria and shows label details, or just repeats marketing copy. Customer reviews. Since October 2024, an FTC rule has banned fake reviews and testimonials, including AI-generated reviews and reviews from people who never used the product. The same rule prohibits: - buying positive or negative reviews; - undisclosed reviews from company insiders; - company-controlled review sites posing as independent; - suppressing negative reviews. Violators face civil penalties. What to look for: - A "verified buyer" label. - A mix of ratings. A wall of perfect five-star reviews is a warning sign, not reassurance. - Specific, believable details about the product and the experience. - Disclosure when a reviewer received free product. Remember what reviews can and can't tell you. Most people can't feel a change in their NAD+ levels. Reviews are more useful for practical things, such as shipping, capsule size, side effects and customer service, than for judging whether a product "works." ### Red Flags to Watch For The FDA's own list of health-fraud warning signs includes claims such as "scientific breakthrough," "miracle cure," "secret ingredient" and "ancient remedy." For NAD supplements specifically, watch for: - "FDA approved" or an FDA logo on the label or site. - "Reverses aging" or any claim to treat, cure or prevent a disease. - "Clinically proven" for energy, focus or aging, when no trial of the finished product exists. - Dramatic percentages about NAD+ decline ("you've lost half your NAD+ by 50") with no source. - "Proprietary blend" hiding individual doses. - Before-and-after photos or miracle testimonials. - Countdown timers, "only 3 left" messages and other pressure tactics. - No company address, no named manufacturer, no way to reach a person. ### Frequently Asked Questions #### What is the best NAD supplement? The best NAD supplement is the one that passes this checklist and fits what you need. It should use a well-studied precursor at a dose used in human trials, list every dose, explain any added ingredients, have independent testing you can verify, be made under GMP standards, be easy to take daily, and have a clear guarantee. Be skeptical of any list that crowns a single winner without showing its criteria. #### Is NR or NMN better? Both are NAD+ precursors made from vitamin B3, and both raise NAD+ in human studies. NR has the longer human research record. Strong head-to-head trials comparing their health effects are still scarce, so neither has been shown to be clearly superior. What matters more is the dose, the quality and the transparency of the specific product. #### Are more expensive NAD supplements better? Not necessarily. Compare the cost per day at the dose you'd actually take, not the bottle price. Then check what you're getting for that cost: the precursor dose, the other ingredients, independent testing and the guarantee. A higher price is only worth it if it buys more of what's on this checklist. For reference, at list prices Lujevit works out to $2.93 a day for a single bottle ($88 for 30 servings) and $2.05 a day on the six-bottle pack ($369.60 for 180 servings). #### How long before I know if it's working? In clinical trials, daily NR raised blood NAD+ within two weeks. That's a lab measurement, though, not something you feel. Whether and when you notice anything varies from person to person, which is one reason a fair guarantee matters. ### How Lujevit Measures Up We built Lujevit to pass this checklist. Starting a new supplement comes with a quiet question: how will I know if it's doing anything? This guide gives you an honest, week-by-week picture of your first month with Lujevit. It covers what studies measured, what you might or might not notice, how to keep track, and how to decide what to do on day 30. The short answer: In clinical studies, daily nicotinamide riboside raised NAD+ levels in the blood within about two weeks. That's a lab measurement, not a feeling. Whether you notice a change in how you feel is less certain, and not noticing one in the first month is normal. The best way to judge is consistent daily use for the full 30 days, plus a simple log. ### First, What Lujevit Is (and Isn't) Designed to Do Lujevit is designed to support the way your cells produce energy, and to support healthy aging.\* It starts with 500 mg of nicotinamide riboside chloride, an NAD+ precursor, and adds five compounds that support mitochondrial energy production, antioxidant defense and the cell's natural renewal processes.\* It's important to know what it isn't: - It isn't a stimulant. There's no caffeine and no jolt. Don't expect a buzz 30 minutes after your first dose. - It isn't a quick fix. It works through daily intake over weeks, not a single dose. - It isn't a treatment. It doesn't treat any condition, and it doesn't replace sleep, exercise or medical care. Starting with the right expectations is the best way to judge your first month fairly. ### How Long Does NAD+ Take to Work? If you're wondering how long NAD supplements take to work, it helps to separate two things. What changes in your body. Raising NAD+ is the effect that has been measured in human trials. In a placebo-controlled trial, daily nicotinamide riboside raised NAD+ in the blood within two weeks, and the increase lasted for the rest of the eight-week study. Two weeks was the first time point measured; blood levels can start rising sooner. What you feel. This is harder to predict. Whether higher NAD+ leads to effects people notice in daily life is still being studied, and so far the results have been mixed. Not noticing a change is common, even when lab measures rise. Individual experience varies. ### A Realistic Week-by-Week Guide #### Week 1: Build the routine Your only goal this week is consistency: two capsules with your first meal, every day. If you haven't already, pick a spot for the bottle where you'll see it at breakfast (see [How to Take Lujevit](https://www.lujevit.com/science/articles/how-to-take-lujevit)). You probably won't notice anything this week, and that's expected. If your stomach feels slightly off, make sure you're taking Lujevit with food. #### Week 2: The lab change you can't feel By now, studies show blood NAD+ is consistently raised with daily use. It's an important biological step, but you likely won't feel it. Keep going and keep your log. #### Weeks 3 and 4: Notice, don't hunt By now Lujevit should be part of your morning. This is a good time to look back at your log, but try not to scan every hour for signs. Energy changes day to day for many reasons, including sleep, stress, workload, alcohol and hormones. One good or bad day doesn't tell you much. A pattern across two weeks tells you more. ### NAD Supplement "Before and After": What's Realistic Search "NAD supplement before and after" and you'll find dramatic photos and transformation stories. We don't publish those, and here's why. NAD+ works at the cellular level. There's no visible "after" in a mirror, and claims that a supplement makes you look years younger aren't supported by research. Studies of NAD+ precursors measure things like blood NAD+ levels over weeks, not overnight changes in how people look or feel. A realistic before and after looks more like this: - Before: a counter with several bottles and no clear routine. - After 30 days: one consistent morning habit, a log of how your energy actually changed, and enough information to decide whether to continue. ### Possible Side Effects in the First Weeks In clinical trials of nicotinamide riboside, side effects were similar to placebo, and an eight-week placebo-controlled trial reported no flushing. As with any new supplement, a few people notice mild digestive discomfort at first. Taking Lujevit with a meal usually helps. Stop taking Lujevit and talk to your doctor if any discomfort persists. Seek care right away if you notice signs of an allergic reaction, such as rash, swelling or difficulty breathing. Not recommended for pregnant or nursing women. If you have a medical condition or take medication, consult your physician before use. ### How to Track Your First Month A simple log makes day 30 much easier to judge. Once a day, takes one minute: | What to note | Why | | --- | --- | | Did I take Lujevit today? (yes/no) | Consistency is the foundation | | Hours of sleep, and how rested I felt (1–5) | Sleep affects energy more than anything else | | Energy at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. (1–5) | Mid-afternoon is where many people feel the dip | | Cups of coffee | Context for your energy notes | | Anything unusual (late night, travel, illness, stress) | Context for good and bad days | If you use a sleep tracker, look at trends rather than nightly scores. Day-to-day readings can be noisy. And keep in mind that a personal log can't separate Lujevit from everything else that changed this month, so read it as a rough guide. ### Day 30: How to Decide What's Next At the end of your first bottle, look at your log and ask yourself three questions: 1. Did I take it consistently? If you missed many days, the month wasn't a fair test. 2. Did anything shift across weeks 3 and 4 compared with week 1? Look at your afternoon energy, how you wake up, and your coffee count. 3. Does the routine fit my life? A supplement only helps if you'll keep taking it. If you want to continue: most NAD+ studies run for weeks to months, and the three-bottle pack (90 days) gives you a longer trial at a lower price per bottle. If it's not for you: Lujevit comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee, counted from delivery. Starting the day your order arrives keeps your first month inside that window. In studies, daily nicotinamide riboside raised blood NAD+ levels within about two weeks. Whether and when you notice changes in how you feel varies from person to person, which is why we suggest judging after a full 30 days of consistent use. #### What if I don't feel anything after 30 days? That's common. In studies, blood NAD+ rose with daily use, while effects people could feel weren't consistently found. Look at your log for gradual patterns, and decide whether you want a longer trial or would rather use the guarantee. #### Can I take more to feel results faster? No. Don't exceed two capsules a day unless your healthcare professional advises it. Higher doses raise blood NAD+ more in studies, but that hasn't been shown to make people feel better sooner. #### Should I stop if I feel worse? If you have persistent discomfort, stop taking Lujevit and talk to your doctor. If you're simply having a few tiring days, check your log for other causes, such as sleep, stress or illness, before drawing conclusions. ### References 1. Conze D, Brenner C, Kruger CL.
